Engagement - Guest Post by Desiree Mints Photography

Hello, my name is Desiree Mints from @desiree.mphotography on Instagram and Desiree Mints Photography on Facebook. My friend and soon to be brother-in-law Jake asked me to write a small post for his photography website regarding the photo-shoot I did for him and his lovely fiancée, my sister Jewel.

Let me start by saying I am a very green photographer, amateur and still at the beginning of my photography journey with lots more to learn about the art. I've never done an engagement shoot before, so when Jake asked me to shoot his, I was very excited to have the opportunity to take pictures for such an amazing couple and for such a lovely moment in their lives, their engagement!

By the time the photo-shoot day came along, I was ready to go, very excited and readily equipped with 2 cameras: one being Jake's Nikon D610 and the other, my Canon Rebel T8i. My husband also joined us; he randomly became my second shooter/camera bag carrier, and he surprised me by taking great photos as well.

The photo-shoot was a blast! Due to my lack of experience, my posing methods were a bit, well, how do I put this?.. Silly! To get Jewel to face her head and set her eyes where I wanted her to look, I removed my shoe and placed it in the direction she was to look at and said dramatically, "Look at the shoe!" And she did with a laugh. That's just one example of that; besides the silliness, I really did want to pose them well and tried my best. Jacob and Jewel were both very good at following my posing directions and so much fun to be around.

I want to end this by saying, doing this photo-shoot was a risk for me - when taking pictures for others, I worry about messing up, and that fear can shove me into a don't-bother-trying attitude; but something I've learned recently is if we don't take the risks, we'll never fail, but then, we'll also never grow. I grew so much in photography from this photo-shoot: I learned about posing, lighting and editing with the help of Jake.

So, I thank you, Jake and Jewel, so much for giving me this opportunity to take a risk, to spend time with you two God-loving people, and the opportunity to grow in something I love. God bless and have a good day!
